What is Compounding?

Compounding is the preparation of medication from scratch and dates back to the foundation of Pharmacy.  Sterile and Non-Sterile prescription compounding is both an art and a science which requires highly skilled professionals.  High grade pharmaceutical standard ingredients such as USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) or BP (British Pharmacopoeia) are used.  Standards are put into place and Quality Control measures are strongly enforced to meet the set guidelines for compounding in a Pharmacy setting.
Compounding provides the patient, physician and pharmacist triad with a suite of solutions to medication challenges.  Compounding Pharmacists are real problem solving experts.  Along with their Pharmacy team, they work in innovative ways to meet the special needs of their patient.

Compounding continues to grow in popularity. It solves medication challenges which would not be possible through traditional medicine.  Alternatives include:

Dosage

A patient may need a medication strength not readily available. With the physician’s permission, the pharmacist can change the strength.

Flavour

Flavouring may be added to make the medication more palatable for the patient.

Form

Medication can be compounded into a liquid suspension for patients unable to swallow tablets or capsules.

Delivery

The pharmacist is also able to suggest a different delivery system such as lozenges, lollipops, nasal spray, eye drops, injection or transdermal gel or cream so that it can be adsorbed through the skin.

Veterinary compounds are even in greater demand due to the limited selection of manufactured medications available to treat animals.

Compounding medication is a vital part of quality medical care.  The possibilities are endless.
